Making money sometimes can be as simple as selling something that you already have. That’s right. Inspired by the latest Netflix documentary called the Tinder Swindler, the show talks about a real-life Casanova who swindled women out of large sums of money. In a plot twist, one of the girls took the scammer’s designer clothes & sold them off to earn back some of the money he has stolen from her.
We often have unwanted items such as clothes that we have outgrown, old clothes, gadgets & some other items that have been in our closet or storeroom for the longest time. When was the last time you have actually used these items? We often may not conduct a spring cleaning but when we do, how do you handle those items? Do you continue storing it, donate it or do you sell it?
I am also guilty in the sense when it comes to old items that I have dozens of them in my closet & drawer. For the older clothes, either I will recycle them to become my pajamas or I will just keep them there. There are no thoughts of me wanting to sell those items. If you asked me, I may feel reluctant for not wanting to let go of those items or maybe I am just lazy to find ways to sell them. Aside from old clothes, I do have other old gadgets that I am just keeping in my drawer.
Looking at the second-hand market global valuation for apparel, it is actually worth USD27 million worldwide in the year 2020. Aside from the second-hand designers or branded clothes, there are also other demands for second-hand clothes which some thrift stores or sellers are selling online. Their selling price can be up to RM200 or more depending on clothes design, quality or brand. With more online platforms that are available to sell second-hand items, the second-hand market does expect to be booming for the next 10 years. Aside from your apparel, handbags, or fashion items, there are also demands for second items which some of the parts will be used to refurbish computers, laptops, phones, and other electrical items. If you have old unwanted furniture, there is also demand for it, especially for those old antique collectors.
If the items listed above are something that you want to let go of, now it’s time to look into how can you sell it off. The simplest method is to sell it via Facebook Marketplace. When I sold my iPhone 8 Plus almost a year ago, I actually sold it via Facebook Marketplace. I also remembered that I sold some of my gym furniture & electrical appliances when I relocated to a new location in July 2020. My overall experience is good but I did have one experience where the potential buyer wanted to meet at midnight. Perhaps daytime was not convenient for him but I actually turn him down for my own safety. There are also other platforms where you are able to sell second-hand items such as Carousell or Mudah where you can sell or buy the items you want. Just in case there is no demand for the clothes that you sell, you can also consider donating them or you can actually bring them to H&M to exchange for vouchers.
Perhaps to some of you, you may think that the total amount of money you make from selling these items won’t be that much, but with the numbers that were shown based on the statistics, we may all be wrong. Over the next few weekends, I will be doing some cleaning & digging to try and sell some of my stuff. I will be advertising it on Facebook Marketplace to see if I can fetch some sales over some of my old items. The setup & photo taking will be less than 10 minutes for you to get it up for sale.
