AirAsia has recently launched AirAsia Super+ which is an annual subscription that offers “free” domestic & ASEAN flights within a period of 1 year along with other perks such as free food delivery, insurance & more. Prior to launching AirAsia Super+, they also launched AirAsia Unlimited Pass which is similar to Super+ with lesser perks in 2020 but due to the global pandemic situation, I’m not sure what actually happens to the subscribers to the previous subscription.
During the new AirAsia Super+ launch, I was tempted to buy it at first but with all my previous open flight tickets & credit vouchers, I decided to wait. The initial launch price was RM639 & it later increased to RM699. After they increased to RM699 & my travel plans were planned, I have decided to purchase it as an initiative to save more money. As more borders are steadily opening up, I decided to subscribe to AirAsia Super+.
My trip was finalized when my teammates & I decided to make 2 trips to both Bangkok & Phuket in 2022 for competitions & training which is why I feel like the subscription would come in handy. Aside from my planned trips to both Bangkok & Phuket, I do have frequent trips to Kuala Lumpur mainly to support & corner my teammates for their BJJ matches that usually occur every few months. Just by seeing the frequency of my travel itself, theoretically, Super+ is definitely good for me.
Below is the actual travel cost between me & my other teammates(who did not purchase AirAsia Super+):
Booking Date: 20 May 2022
AirAsia Super+: YesBooking Date: 16 May 2022
AirAsia Super+: NoBooking Date: 30 May 2022
AirAsia Super+: NoTo summarise, my actual flight cost is actually “free” but I have to pay other surcharges. Each of us made a different type of purchase for our flight. For mine, I bought additional luggage space since I anticipate that I will be shopping a lot when I’m there. Another friend of mine bought additional insurance which has an additional cost of RM47.50. Just by comparing the flight cost with my friends, I am saving between RM138.40 to RM198.40. Let’s calculate another way around, I spent RM699 for AirAsia Super+ & I am able to enjoy “free” flights for 1 year. For my Bangkok trip, even though I save an average of RM150, I have also spent RM699 in advance. In a way, I am actually paying all my travel fares in advance.
There is one disadvantage to Super+ which also makes it not so worth it is the travel timing. Instead of being able to travel during our desired date, we have to adjust our travel timing to non-peak timing to be able to enjoy the “free” flight. I have tried for my tentative traveling date for other destinations but it seems to be quite expensive since I select the peak timing.
Aside from “free” flights, they are also offering a pre-departure Covid Coverage insurance plan for travelers. Based on the details as per the link, it seems to be worth it as long as you are traveling. Another 1 more perk that I find to be not so worth it for me is their “free” AirAsia Food delivery. You are able to enjoy free food delivery with a minimum purchase of RM15 within a 5-15km delivery distance. It is similar to the Grab Food version of the Grab Unlimited perk but the only problem with AirAsia Food is, that the choice is food is limited especially for my home delivery area. As of now, I have yet to try AirAsia Food due to their limited choice of food.
AirAsia Super+ is currently not available to purchase anymore but if you ask me whether it is worth it or not, it really depends on the amount of traveling you are doing within 1 year. Do you plan to travel domestically & internationally up to 5 times a year? Aside from that, is AirAsia Food your choice of food delivery when you are ordering in? If yes, then AirAsia Super+ is definitely worth it. If not, it is just a waste of money to pay RM699 in advance for this subscription.
