Should You Spend Your Money To Learn About Investment From Online Guru?

Hello Grasshoppa,

Prior to the pandemic, most of our social media feed is filled with sponsored posts by companies or gurus that will teach you how to invest via their investment courses. Usually, you will be paying a small amount of money or getting a free preview of their courses at a hotel in your area. Since I started my investment journey, I have attended 2 free preview courses by 2 different gurus. The structure of the free preview course is almost the same where they will be showing a sneak peek on what you will learn when you sign up, the purpose they are doing these courses for the attendees & how have they achieve financial freedom with investing. These investment courses can be related to stocks trading, futures or even forex. One of my friends paid almost RM5,000 to attend a forex trading course where it aimed to guide them on how to trade forex. Although he has forgotten most of the details, those courses seem to be very profitable by those organisers. Imagine paying RM5,000 & you have an average of 30 attendees, that is RM150,000 gross profit per session. If they are organising 1 course per month with an average of 30 attendees, they will be getting RM1,800,000 per annum. It is a profitable business for the organisers. If you have attended such courses before, do you think it is helpful for you? Personally, I don’t think so.

I personally think that most of the details shown are not a secret, to begin with. Those details that are shared by them are those details you can learn via the internet, books, YouTube & blogs. You can even pay USD10-20 for a similar course with similar content from Udemy. Why do you want to pay extra for it? Since the beginning of the pandemic, the online gurus have switched most of their courses to online courses & they are charging similar fees. Every single time when I am on YouTube, I am always seeing those forced advertisements by those gurus. If you asked me whether it is a scam, I personally don’t think so but I think that it is an overpriced course that is charged to the attendees that are seeking the “secret” to earn money. If you are paying RM5,000 to learn the “secret”, how long do you think you need to earn back that money? Do all the successful gurus offer you a money-back guarantee if you fail to be profitable with all your investment? There is no guarantee that you are able to earn money or be a successful investor after you are enrolled in these investing courses.

During desperate times where most of us are suffering from reduction or loss of income, we are all desperate to find ways to make more money. Not being able to manage your money during this time will take a huge toll on you & I personally don’t recommend you to enrol in such courses but instead, you can enhance your knowledge & investment skills by reading books, blogs or other online sources. Trust me, you really don’t need those gurus to guide as all the “secret” you need is available over the internet for FREE. Also for those gurus that are claiming their success in investing, perhaps they can also do charity by offering full free courses for the public to truly help them to enhance their skills. It will be helpful for all of them during this tough time & I trust you don’t need any profit from it since your main source of income is from investing not those courses you are offering. Or if needed, you may charge a minimum fee to cover any operating course to help those who are keen to learn during this time. I hope I don’t offend any investment gurus out there as I am just sharing my thoughts as a blogger that offers my reading material for free. My blog is fully sustainable mainly by the referrals code that my readers are using when they invest in my recommend investment platforms.
