Why You Should Sweat Over The Small Stuff

Hello Grashoppa,

Almost every one of us has this idea of making lots of money from everything we do like in our business or investment. Especially when it comes to business ideas, I heard many of my friends want to explore businesses that can make them big money. The problem is, these grand ideas may not come often & they tend to ignore opportunities to make a small income as a start.

This is an actual reflection of one of the businesses where I spend only 5-10 minutes daily to generate between RM500-RM1000 each month. When I think about it, I realised how much time & effort I put into generating such income. To be honest, when I started to involve in this project, I spent countless hours building the business from scratch by making lots of mistakes in marketing & even business handling. Fast forward a few years later, the time I spend to maintain this business becomes even lesser & the business is growing each year.

When I start this business, I was only looking to earn perhaps RM300 max for this as the demand for it is niche, but I did not realize how much potential it actually had until I was fully involved in it. What I truly learn is, sometimes we often think about those big opportunities & we forgo small opportunities that can grow bigger in the future. Why do I think that we should sweat over the small stuff because the small stuff can actually generate higher income over the long term? Another example is a real-life story of a lady that sells cloth that earns between RM1-RM2 for each item. She is operating her side business from home while being a full-time housewife. Fast forward, she manages to earn RM80,000 within 20 years from her side hustle.

Similarly, the same goes for investment too. We often overlook the small amount of money that we put into our investment. If you invest RM100 each month for a period of 10 years with 5% compounding interest annually, you can easily make RM3,500 by investing a total of RM12,000. Remember Grasshoppa, it is just by investing RM100 each month. It is effortless.

When we start to care & look into small stuff like this, it really makes us realize that all this little momentum is a build-up towards something even bigger. It can be from a business where you can earn RM100 each month to a business where you can earn RM10,000 each month. Or it can also be from investment habits of investing RM100 into a habit of investing RM1,000 each month. These little habits will make a difference in the future for sure.

Aside from gaining momentum & building good habits, another great point that I find from all this is the amount of stress that we will have. The bigger it is, the more stressful it will be. When you are doing a smaller business or investing a smaller amount in the start, the risk that you are taking is low therefore you won’t feel the stress. Even when your business or investment amount grows bigger, you won’t feel much stress too as it is a slow gained momentum & you would have anticipated better as it grows bigger.

With all these points, perhaps it is time for you to start small over any business ideas or investments & slowly grow them from there rather than waiting for something big that may not happen if you never start or waiting to start.
