Hello Grasshoppa,
Let’s talk about something that’s been popping up more & more lately, side hustles. Whether it’s food delivery, freelance gigs, dropshipping, content creation, or even selling kuih on Instagram, Malaysians are grinding outside their 9-to-5 like never before. But why the sudden boom? What’s pushing this wave of hustle in 2025?
The first answer is obvious: cost of living. Prices keep climbing. Essentials like food, rent, petrol, they all eat up a bigger chunk of your paycheck now compared to five years ago. Even with salary increments, many Malaysians feel like they’re just treading water. So, if your main job isn’t keeping up with inflation, a side hustle becomes your life jacket.
Secondly, the internet has made starting a side business ridiculously accessible. Platforms like TikTok Shop, Shopee, Fiverr, & Upwork have become digital playgrounds for anyone with a skill, product, or personality. You no longer need a brick-and-mortar store or a big capital to start earning. All you need is a smartphone, an internet connection, & some hustle. From making RM200 a week baking cookies to earning USD as a freelance designer, Malaysians are realizing that the global economy is only one click away.
And let’s not forget the gig economy, such as Grab, Foodpanda, Lalamove & they’re more than just delivery platforms. For many, they’re flexible income streams. Especially for those who can’t commit to fixed working hours, these gigs are freedom & money rolled into one. You work when you want, & the money starts flowing in as fast as you move.
Another underrated factor? The rise of financial literacy. Malaysians today are way more informed about money. Thanks to social media & financial blogs (like this one, wink), people are waking up to the idea of multiple income streams, passive income, & the long-term dangers of depending solely on a single employer. Even younger Malaysians, fresh out of university, are exploring ways to make side money to pay off PTPTN loans or save for their first property.
But here’s the flip side, not all side hustles are created equal. Some burn you out. Some don’t actually make money after you subtract costs. Some even turn into scams wrapped in fancy words like “investment package” or “financial opportunity.” So, while side hustles are powerful, you still need to approach them with a black belt mindset — calculated, disciplined, & ready to tap out of bad deals.
In 2025, the real flex isn’t just having a side hustle. It’s having one that pays well, aligns with your lifestyle, & builds towards your long-term freedom. So, whether you’re selling nasi lemak in the morning or running an online store at night, just make sure it’s not costing you your peace or burning you out.
The ultimate goal? To someday turn your hustle into your main gig — & then spend your days doing what you love, with who you love, whenever you want.
OSS!
