Hello Grasshoppa,
Recently, my gym celebrated its 12th anniversary, a milestone that marks over a decade of growth, challenges, & victories. We gathered with our coaching team & shareholders to reflect on this journey. The path has been anything but smooth—especially during the pandemic when we faced gym closures & zero income. Yet, through sheer perseverance, we not only survived but expanded our facility, launching a second branch during our 10th year. I’ve learned some valuable lessons along the way, & I’d like to share them with you.
1. Appreciate Your Team
A business, especially a gym, is only as strong as its team. A motivated & happy coaching team is at the core of our success. When the coaches feel valued & appreciated, they deliver their best in every class, enhancing the overall experience for our members. The support & loyalty of the team has been crucial in our journey, particularly through tough times.
2. Lead by Example
As a business leader, actions speak louder than words. This principle is something I hold close to heart, especially when leading my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) coaching team. Before I request something from them—whether it’s punctuality, dedication, or any other quality—I make sure I embody it first. For example, if I expect the coaches to arrive early before their class, I do the same. This not only fosters mutual respect but also sets the standard for professionalism within the team.
3. Manage Your Costs Wisely
Financial discipline is essential, particularly in an industry as unpredictable as fitness. The pandemic taught us a harsh but valuable lesson in the importance of managing costs. We carefully monitor every expense, from utilities to supplies, to ensure we’re operating as efficiently as possible. Cutting unnecessary costs & focusing on long-term financial sustainability have allowed us to remain resilient through difficult periods.
4. Plan for the Future
No business can thrive without a clear roadmap. At our gym, we emphasize both short-term goals & long-term vision. This isn’t just a solo effort but a collaborative process with input from the coaching team & shareholders. We continuously seek their insights to ensure we’re all aligned on our collective goals. Planning ahead also helps us anticipate potential challenges, ensuring that we remain adaptable in an ever-changing market.
Conclusion:
After 12 years, I’m still as passionate as ever about growing our gym. There’s plenty of room for improvement, & I’m excited to explore what the future holds. With a strong, committed team behind us, we’re well-positioned to achieve even greater things in the coming years. I’m grateful for every member of the team & for the support we’ve received from our shareholders. The journey has been long, but with dedication & resilience, we’ve built something truly special.
