My Take On Working From Home (WFH)

Hello Grasshoppa,

The new normal, post-pandemic can be a good or bad thing for some of us, especially in our working life. I remember when I was stuck at home for a few months where I was only working at home, attending only web meetings & doing my work from my home desk. It was totally different from what I used to be where I have to go to the office almost every day & the expectation of my work is to meet my customers face to face.

Even with the new normal, I am seeing that my life somehow is returning to what it was. As of now, I am only required to be in the office whenever I am needed & my working meeting is a mixture of face-to-face meetings & web meetings. I guess this is the new normal for most people now.

I have noticed an increase in my current productivity with the new normal. When I was office-bound, I had to be awake by 7 am daily & I have to be in the office by 8.30 am. The time needed to prepare to go to the office & time needed to get to the office alongside bad traffic jams was time-consuming. Those times that I use to prepare to go to the office & stuck in the traffic can be used for me to sleep an extra 30-45 minutes & the best part of all, I can avoid the routine traffic jams.

Aside from that, my lunch usually can be pretty unhealthy & time-consuming. Despite having an hour lunch break, lunch hour can sometimes be extended to 1 hour 30 minutes with just leaving the office to get into the lunch venue, waiting for the food & eating. Choices of food was also depending on the majority especially when you are eating with a big group.

After working hours is the worst of all especially when the roads are filled with cars between 5.30 pm-6.30 pm & usually we are all stuck in an hour or more just to get home or our next destination. Especially after a long day, being in a traffic jam is truly horrible.

Just an overall estimation, the time that we are using just gets to work up until we arrived home, it will take us an average of 2-3 hours alone. With the WFH lifestyle, these hours can be used to do more productive activities especially when it comes to work while having a work-life balance. Imagine taking the hours that are stuck in traffic & convert them to increase your work productivity & use the extra time to focus on life, health & family. I definitely think that it can make a huge difference.

In terms of my meals, whenever I cook my daily meals from home, I don’t spend more than 30 minutes preparing my meals as it can be as simple as rice or sweet potato as my carbs, a source of protein & vegetables. The maximum time spent preparing my meal & eating takes less than an hour compared to eating out whenever I am working in the office. The fact is, I save more time and money & it also helps with my productivity. The best part of all, I can eat healthier meals.

Not all jobs allow you to work from home but it is definitely a new trend that many people want to move forward with in the future. I have spoken to many of my customers regarding their view on WFH & many of them agreed that it actually helps with their productivity & work-life balance too. It is definitely a trend that many people starting to adopt & I personally think that it is a healthier & better choice for many. I can’t speak for all in terms of the benefits of WFH, it is just my view on how it actually helps me in terms of my work-life balance & my health.
