Hello Grasshoppa,
In today’s world, social media is flooded with flashy cars, designer bags, & luxury vacations. Everyone wants to look rich, but the truth is, many of these so-called “wealthy” individuals are drowning in debt just to keep up appearances. If you’re not careful, the need to “show off” can be the very thing that keeps you broke.
The Trap of Looking Wealthy
We live in a society where people measure success based on material possessions. Expensive cars, high-end gadgets, & branded clothing are often seen as symbols of success. But what many don’t realize is that a lot of these luxuries are bought on credit, with money that hasn’t even been earned yet. Maybe they are trying to impress people that don’t care about them but at the same time, is that really important to look rich?
For example, someone earning RM5,000 a month but financing a RM500,000 car isn’t actually rich—they’re just heavily in debt. Their salary goes into car loans, insurance, & maintenance, leaving them with little savings. Meanwhile, someone who drives a 10-year-old car but has RM200,000 in investments is actually in a far better financial position. I’ve seen many cases of people that have own fancy cars or branded items but they struggle to pay the monthly fees & end up they have no savings. I used to be in such situation too & find my thought in the past to be childish to make such a decision.
Spending for Status vs. Building Real Wealth
Real wealth isn’t about how much you spend—it’s about how much you keep & grow. Wealthy individuals understand the power of money management, investing, & financial discipline. Instead of spending on unnecessary luxuries, they put their money into assets that generate more income over time.
Let’s look at two different mindsets:
- The Status Seeker
- Buys the latest iPhone on installment
- Upgrades their car every few years to impress others
- Spends thousands on branded clothing but has no emergency fund
- Lives paycheck to paycheck despite earning a good salary
- The Wealth Builder
- Buy only what they can afford without going into debt
- Invests in stocks, real estate, or side businesses
- Has an emergency fund & multiple income streams
- Doesn’t feel the need to prove their wealth to anyone
Over time, the wealth builder becomes financially free, while the status seeker is stuck in an endless cycle of earning & spending. Ask yourself, are you a Status Seeker or a Wealth Builder?
The Role of Financial Knowledge
Richness isn’t just about money—it’s also about knowledge. If you don’t understand personal finance, no amount of income will ever be enough. Some people earn RM10,000 a month but struggle financially, while others earn RM3,000 & still manage to save & invest.
For example, someone who understands financial literacy will:
- Use credit cards wisely for rewards & pay off balances in full
- Avoid high-interest loans for unnecessary purchases
- Prioritize savings & investments before spending on luxuries
- Continuously learn about money management & wealth-building strategies
Meanwhile, those who lack financial knowledge fall into traps like credit card debt, bad loans, & poor spending habits.
How to Escape the “Fake Rich” Lifestyle
If you find yourself spending money just to impress others, it’s time to change your mindset. Here’s how:
- Live Within Your Means – Just because you can buy something doesn’t mean you should. Ask yourself if it’s a want or a need.
- Invest in Assets, Not Liabilities – Instead of buying an expensive car, consider investing in stocks, property, or even upskilling yourself to earn more.
- Stop Comparing Yourself to Others – Many people who show off their wealth are secretly struggling. Focus on your own financial goals.
- Educate Yourself – Read books, follow finance blogs (like this one), & surround yourself with people who are good with money.
Conclusion:
At the end of the day, wealth isn’t about looking rich—it’s about financial security, freedom, & the ability to live life on your own terms. The next time you’re tempted to buy something just to impress others, remember: real wealth doesn’t scream, it whispers.
