These 5 Purchases Have Changed My Life

Hello Grasshoppa,

In my previous post on My Top 5 Things, I Regret Buying, I touched on my compulsive buying & things that I’ve regretted buying due to poor judgment. In this post, I will be sharing My Top 5 Best Purchases That Have Changed My Life. Talking about spending money, all of us spend our money differently & we value our purchases differently. For some they look at buying branded items as part of a worthy purchase & to some, they don’t fancy such a purchase. Personally, for me, I do buy branded items from time to time, but I consider my purchase to be based on a form of reward & I will only buy it if there is a sale or a good deal. But when I look at my spending over the years, most of it is towards my food & self-development.

What Are My Top 5 Purchases That Have Changed My Life?

1. Self-Development Courses
Each year, I will be allocating a certain amount of money to invest in myself. This mainly applies to some BJJ instructional that I will be buying almost every month for my own development & coaching. As a martial art gym owner, I am also taking up different fitness courses to expand my knowledge in fitness. Aside from self-development related to fitness & BJJ, I am also investing in personal finance & investment course to boost my knowledge of my personal finance & investment. I find that these self-development courses are super important to me to actually expand my knowledge & also keep up with the current trend & development. This year alone, I have spent RM6,000 on my self-development-related course.

2. Books
There was a time when I used to finish a book within 2 weeks. That was when I was spending on average RM2,000 per year on books. Although I don’t buy books that often anymore & I have also switched to e-books, those early days of me reading books have shaped me & expanded my knowledge in investment & personal finance. It has really helped me to make better decisions on both my personal finance & investment.

3. High-Performance Laptop
Switching my laptop from my old Microsoft Surface to my current Illegear laptop is also one of the best decisions so far. Not only has it helped me to get my work done faster due to better performance, but it has also lightened my bag since it is a lighter laptop. On the laptop performance, no doubt this laptop is a perfect laptop especially when it comes to any work that requires a higher RAM capacity such as video editing, but this laptop also has some little things that I don’t like such as non-touchscreen function, battery performance & also big bulky adapter. Aside from all that, this laptop delivers the best function to me.

4. My House
When I initially bought my house, I saw that as an investment, but during the pandemic period, I decided to move in. I have renovated & designed the house to align with how I want it to be. Although it is a small studio unit, it is designed to have a proper workstation, a place for me to work out & do my BJJ drills. It is a perfect place for me to work & work out as & when I need to. Aside from my current house, my previous house was also a good purchase as I managed to sell it for a profit to pay my debt.

5. My Holiday Trips
Spending money for a holiday may not be ideal for some. For me, all of my money spent on each holiday is to create memories. Although my past few trips are mostly related to BJJ, I had so much fun doing it. I get to explore different parts of the world, experience different cultures, taste different food, & compete in BJJ tournaments. All these trips are truly fun to experience.

Conclusion:

My top 5 best purchases that have shaped my life are mostly related to my self-development, creating memories & life comfort. For me, each purchase has provided me with life satisfaction & fulfillment as I get to develop myself & live the life that I want. It may vary for different people as each of us approaches & values our life differently. As long as you are happy, feeling fulfilled & satisfied with your purchase, there is no right or wrong on how you spend your money or what you purchase with it.
