My Honest Review On AirAsia Super+ Subscription

Hello Grasshoppa,

When I initially wrote about AirAsia Super+ Subscription last year, I had doubts about whether it was worth it or not after my purchase. There were a few thoughts that I had after my purchase, which are on my travel frequency and also my ability to utilize all the other perks. At that time, it was introduced at RM639, and when I made my purchase, it was priced at RM699. When I initially made my purchase, I was planning to utilize all the perks, especially the “free” flight perks since it was the main reason I spent my money to subscribe to the Super+ package. After 1 full year, did I fully utilize the subscription and save money from it?
I made my purchase of the AirAsia Super+ in May 2022. Since then, I have traveled a total of 3 times with it. The only savings that I am able to record were my flight to Bangkok (return trip), where I managed to save RM138.40 with it when I compare the price of my purchase (RM275.60) vs. my teammate’s flight price (RM334). I have managed to book another flight from Bangkok to Phuket (return trip) where I am enjoying my “free” flight, and my expenses were RM242.57. When I purchased my flight in 2023 from Penang to Bangkok and from Bangkok to Phuket, I was not able to redeem my “free” flight due to the peak season, and my purchase price was RM645.33 (I saved some money by using my AirAsia points). That means that out of my 4 trips, I only managed to redeem 2 “free” flights.
They have other perks such as AirAsia Ride where they are offering discounts. Since my purchase, I have tried to book AirAsia Ride once, but the booking was canceled, and I had to order GrabCar instead. In my other experience using AirAsia Ride, I overlooked the discount part, so I did not enjoy any perks from that. Therefore, I did not manage to get any benefit from AirAsia Ride perks. As for AirAsia Food, they are offering free delivery with a minimum purchase of RM15 within a 5-15km distance. I usually cook at home most of the time. Whenever I wanted to order using the food delivery app, Grab Food is my first choice due to more options and higher discounts from my Grab Unlimited subscription.
Looking at how much I utilize the AirAsia Super+ subscription, it seems that I am not able to save much from it; instead, I am spending more by subscribing to it. I was hoping to utilize it more by redeeming “free” flights, but the choices of flying for “free” are quite limited. What I am learning from it is that it is impossible to plan ahead based on their “free” flight date as I need to plan my travel based on public holidays, and my annual leave and I do not have much flexibility on the date due to my BJJ competition date.
Recently, AirAsia has reintroduced their AirAsia Super+ where they are offering slightly different perks compared to the initial perks. Currently, they are offering 2 subscriptions: Super+ Lite (RM888/year) and Super+ Premium (RM2,288/year). The most significant difference is on their destination where Super+ Premium is able to redeem “free” flights for Malaysia AirAsia X flight. They have removed AirAsia Food perks, but they are adding in a 5% discount for hotels.

If you ask me now whether I will still continue to subscribe to AirAsia Super+, my answer will be NO. The reason is, I don’t get to save much when I subscribe to it from May 2022 to May 2023. Even with my recent flight purchases to multiple destinations, I prefer to explore more choices outside of AirAsia, but with the subscription, I am limiting my choices due to me wanting to utilize my subscription. As for other perks such as hotel discounts, I am good with the Agoda app as I managed to save a lot from my VIP Platinum discount, AgodaCash, and also their Cashback Rewards. If you are looking to subscribe to the latest AirAsia Super+, you will really need to have a deep consideration of the initial spending that you have to pay to subscribe, the frequency of your travel, and also other factors which may cause you to spend more than save.
