What Has Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Taught Me On Investment

Hello Grasshoppa,

How does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) relate to investment? When I started my blog, I decided to name it based on my 2 ultimate life goals. Firstly, is to be a BJJ Black Belt & secondly, is to become a millionaire. After 3 years of writing this blog, I am still not a BJJ Black Belt nor a millionaire but I am closer to where I was before. Although BJJ & investment aren’t directly related, there are a few concepts that I am able to relate based on my 2 life goals journey.

Consistency Is KeyTo be a better BJJ practitioner, I have to be consistent in training. As for now, I am training between 4-5 days a week to improve my skills. Similar to investing, consistent investment is required in order for me to grow my money.

You Can’t Learn Everything OvernightIf you are an investor, your learning journey is never overnight. You won’t be able to learn everything in a short period of time & you are required to practice what you have learned. It is the same for BJJ. There are so many things to learn & it requires a lifetime for you to learn how to invest.

Be Open-Minded The world is evolving every single day. From different types of investments to the way people invest. Mutual Fund used to be the investment where many people used to invest in but with other investment opportunities such as Robo-advisor, are you open-minded to invest in a modern investment platform. If you are familiar with BJJ, there are old school BJJ & new school BJJ. Whether it is old school or new school, you need to be open-minded to learn everything.

You Never Lose, You LearnI personally can relate to this. I had my fair share of losing money in investments & losing my BJJ competitions. When I lose my match or even made a wrong decision in investing, it is important for me to reflect on why I lost or made the wrong decision. Learning from the mistakes will help me to invest better or perform better in my future BJJ competitions.

Never Compare Yourself With Someone ElseThere will never be a direct comparison between you & someone else. Take example your investment. Sometimes your friend will share on their stock investment return & you will also wonder why didn’t you invest in those particular stocks. Why do you even have to compare? Your risk appetite & the way you invest can be different from your friend’s. Similar to BJJ, we have different size, build, or even limitations on our body. If your friend can execute a certain move better than you, that does not mean that you are bad. Don’t let your limitations affect you instead you should work around your limitations.

Always Have A PlanWhether it is BJJ competition or investing, you need a plan. You won’t able to achieve success without a plan. When you enter a BJJ competition, within that 5-10 minutes of your match, you will know what moves that you plan to execute & pivot it based on your opponent’s strength or weakness. The market situation fluctuates each year & we are not able to predict the market direction. Instead of predicting the market, all you have to do is to execute your investment plan & pivot accordingly if needed.

Slowly But SurelyEveryone has a goal in investing. For me, it is meant for my early retirement & to travel the world to teach BJJ for free. I am 34 years old this year & currently, I am just a BJJ purple belt & not yet a millionaire. Being a Black Belt & a Millionaire are my 2 biggest goals in life & I truly believe that I am able to achieve both in the near future. If you are an investor, you can start investing with a minimum investment amount but that minimum amount can grow into a huge amount if the investment is done consistently.

Conclusion:

This blog is a platform where I share what I’ve learned on investing & personal finance. It is also my personal “journal” where I track my progress on my investment & BJJ journey. When I started writing this blog, it was all about how I got out of a huge debt. I have slowly progressed from that part into sharing about investment platforms that I recommend & also my learning journey on both personal finance & investment. For my readers, thank you for being part of my journey.
