Starting My Own YouTube Channel As My New Side Hustle

Hello Grasshoppa,

In my previous post on List Of Side Hustle That I Have Tried, I have mentioned starting my YouTube Channel to monetize it in a long run to earn extra income. It is an overdue hustle as this idea was sparked many years back when I realised that there is some changes of trend, especially people are moving from blogging to starting their own channel. Many readers prefer to watch graphics instead of readings.

Part of the reason I am not keen at first was because of the editing effort I am so unfamiliar with & also the content of the channel. Editing videos can indeed be challenging but is there any easy task in the world to generate long term income? I’ve seen my friend son who made RM100,000 per month with his YouTube channel & some of my other friends are generating some income just from this effort.

When my friend asked me to start my own channel to share on personal finance & investment, I told her that I am too shy to speak in front of the camera. In my previous experience speaking in front of the camera, I froze most of the time & there are multiple reshoots involved. Maybe it is just my excuse but expanding BBM is part of my long term goal. Since 2018, I’ve been writing at least 170 posts & most of the content is long term content that my readers can still refer to.

Another triggering point was when I was having dinner with my teammate who is also a YouTuber & also another videographer friend. We are discussing how to shoot nice BJJ videos & concepts that can be used during filming & editing. The next thing I knew was, we actually set a date to do filming for my highlight & also moves related to BJJ. I was so motivated that night that I went home to relaunch my new Youtube channel. The whole concept of the channel is BJJ, Personal Finance & Investment. In 2016, I have uploaded 1 video to my channel for fun & that video has generated almost 20,000 views. With that existing channel, all I have to do is to upload more content to it.

After setting up my channel, the next thing I did was to survey a video editing software that I can use to edit my videos. I found a reasonable one with a super user-friendly feature that I can learn at ease. We shot almost 20-30 videos that I can use to edit in long term during the filming day. I plan to upload 1 video each week and the total videos are enough to use for almost 4 months. Learning to edit videos is just like learning to walk as a baby. I need to take each baby steps & learn something new each time I edit new videos.

To date, I have edited 30 videos & each video is scheduled to launch every week. My personal finance & investment concept videos were also released during this period & so far I have released 3 videos. Working from home has allowed me to have more time especially with the reduced time of travelling on the road. This free time will be used to create more useful content for all of you. Hopefully, I can monetise it within 1-2 years. Meanwhile, please subscribe to my channel & I will try my best to post more awesome & useful contents in the future.
